The Caribbean is a favorite destination for sailors. North and South Americans are lucky to have it so close by, and travelers from the world over mark it on their maps as their dream vacation. Here are some of the best Caribbean islands for sailing.

Guadeloupe

The French-owned islands of Guadeloupe are an incredible destination that is commonly overlooked by US travelers, mostly because people simply haven't heard of it. The islands are incredibly diverse, with both volcanic and non-volcanic areas and separate beaches of black and white sand. Pigeon Island, west of the main landmass, offers scuba diving in an area so beautiful that Jacques Cousteau filmed a documentary there. And arguably, the best part is that all the tourism goes on in the background, with no obvious "tourist traps," offering a more authentic island experience.

US Virgin Islands

If you're into exploring, the US Virgin Islands will certainly hold your interest. The islands' perimeter is dotted with hidden beaches and coves, and some of the islands are uninhabited and ripe for exploration! Divers can visit famously beautiful reefs, and sport fishermen love the islands, with deep-sea anglers hauling in blue marlin on a regular basis while fishermen closer to land can look forward to a seasonal catch. If you feel like taking a break from the water— or trying out a different form of transportation— you can go horseback riding.

Cayman Islands

Grand Cayman Island is a great place for diving and fishing, not to mention the famous Seven Mile Beach. Perhaps the most unusual attraction is Stingray City, where you can swim with, feed, and even touch large (and friendly) stingrays. If you're more interested in exploring the depths, the Kittiwake Shipwreck is a fascinating place to scuba dive, both beautiful and intimidating. The ship was sunk deliberately in 2011 to make an artificial reef, but still presents a sobering reminder of what can go wrong on the open ocean!

The Bahamas

The Bahamas are the first islands that come to mind for many people when thinking about Caribbean sailing destinations, and for good reason. First off, there are 700 islands in the Bahamas, and you could spend a lifetime sailing among them and exploring them all. For example, you can sail right up to the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park and explore a unique and pristine island environment… and then leave your anchorage with only 699 islands to go. You will never run out of things to do and see in the Bahamas!
