Email applications are the most common reason for Windows 7 data connections using Iridium 9555 or 9575 satellite phones.
Common email software packages include Airbus SkyFile, Inmarsat AmosConnect, and GMN XGate or SpeedMail.
Outfitter Satellite's recommended email-over-Iridium solution uses a hardware-based hotspot called the Optimizer that works with SpeedMail email software. The Optimizer lets you connect your Windows 7 with Iridium internet -- simply, elegantly and over Wi-Fi. The Optimizer also supports Macintosh computers, iPhones, iPads, and Android devices.Unfortunately, the Optimizer hotspot requires external power which may be unavailable in the remote locations where our customers are travelling. One way to resolve this drawback is to use an external battery pack with or without a solar chargers. The other is to put the Optimizer aside and just connect the Windows 7 with Iridium 9555 using a micro-USB data cable. Yes, SpeedMail can be used directly from the Windows 7 with Iridium 9555 connected to it. This article tells you how to do it.

Using SpeedMail on Windows 7 with Iridium 9555:

This article assumes you already have downloaded SpeedMail and have a username and password. For assistance with that, call Outfitter Satellite at 615-889-8833. The following steps explain how to connect Windows 7 with Iridium phones.
First, go to the SpeedMail program, click the Options menu and select Settings : Connection and make the Default Connection NETWORK CONNECTION and the Type NETWORK CONNECTION. In this mode, any internet connection that your computer has access to can be used by the SpeedMail email software to send email, e.g. the internet connection at your hotel.
Second, create a DUNS (dial up networking service) connection in Windows that will use the Iridium 9555 satellite phone as a modem. Once the DUNS connection is created, you can select it from the Network & Sharing Center list in the tray. Before clicking Connect, wait until you have at least 4 or 5 bars of signal on the LCD screen of the Iridium 9555 satellite phone. When you click Connect, you should immediately see USB DATA CALL IN PROGESS on your phone’s LCD screen. You will have to wait about 30-60 seconds for it to log in. Once the DUNS status indicates CONNECTED, you can run SpeedMail by clicking its START button. At that point any emails previously created and put in the SpeedMail outbox will be transmitted. Any inbound emails waiting for you on the server will be received. When the SpeedMail software indicates FINISHED, you will need to manually Disconnect the DUNS connection.
